Questions Shippers Should Ask Their Providers

Questions Shippers Should Ask Their Providers

A few days ago, I posted about the recent Supreme Court ruling and why carrier selection, documentation, and transportation controls matter more than ever.

The next question is practical:

What should shippers and freight forwarders be asking their transportation providers today?

Here are a few starting points:

  1. How are carriers vetted before they are allowed to haul freight?
  2. Is carrier authority, insurance, and safety data monitored continuously – or only checked once during onboarding?
  3. What happens if a carrier’s insurance lapses or they fall outside compliance requirements?
  4. Is there a documented carrier-selection process?
  5. Are shipment records, rate confirmations, tracking updates, claims activity, and carrier communications stored in one place?
  6. Is there a routing guide or carrier scorecard in place?
  7. Who is responsible for exception management when something goes wrong?
  8. Is the provider simply finding capacity, or are they actively managing transportation risk?

The transportation market has changed.

The lowest rate is not always the best decision. The fastest available truck is not always the safest decision. And a loose process is not a defensible process.

A Managed Transportation Service provider should bring more than pricing.

It should bring structure.

It should bring visibility.

It should bring documentation.

It should bring accountability.

At Freight Partners Group, we help clients put process around transportation decisions so they are not relying on guesswork, one-off carrier choices, or disconnected systems.

Risk cannot be completely eliminated.

But it can be managed more intelligently.

That starts with asking better questions before the load ever moves.
